This course looks at the legal entitlements to benefits for carers of disabled people.

It is a very useful course that sits well with two other courses-

Benefits for Older People(including Attendance Allowance and Pension Credit) and

Benefits and Mental Health(including ESA/ presenting as sick and PIP)

It uses casestudies to-

  • identify and signpost to the correct benefits for carers
  • be aware of when and how Carers Allowance can be claimed and its effect on other benefits including those of the disabled person being cared for
  • the carers premium (on most means tested benefits) and the carers element(of Universal Credit)
  • the effect of work on carers' entitlement to benefit
  • when and how carers 'credits' can be claimed to help protect future claims for National Insurance related benefits
  • the bedroom tax and an extra room for an overnight carer
  • Universal Credit implications for carers
  • how a change in PIP,   DLA or AA can affect status as a carer
  • conditionality- what you have to do to get benefits- how being a carer can help reduce the risk of sanctions(in terms of carers of disabled people and child carers).
  • understand the bedroom tax and the Benefit cap for carers
  • understand council tax and carers
