The government is aiming to save around £1.9 billion by 2030/2031.
Part of that process are changes to the limited capability for work element of UC in April 2026.
More face to face PIP medicals and Work Capability Assessments-
'...Personal Independence Payment (PIP) increasing from 6% in 2024 (57,000) to 30% of all assessments, and the
Work Capability Assessment (WCA) from 13% in 2024 (74,000) to 30%....'
Longer PIP Awards-
'...Currently, the time between award reviews can be as short as nine months and most people do not see a change
in their award at their review.
That is to be extended for the majority of PIP claimants aged 25 and over to a minimum of three years for a new
claim, rising to 5 years at their next review if they remain entitled....'
Reduce the Backlog in WCAs-
We reported in our last newsletter that the government has mainly only been carrying out new WCA's.
The government is carrying out the Timms Review around the descriptors for PIP.
