Recent figures on the number of claimants appealing benefit decisions has shown a huge drop recently since the introduction of Mandatory Reconsiderations(October 2013). Our fears were that claimants would be put off appealing at the same time as funding for advice agencies, which support them, was being reduced. HMCTS tribunals recorded 74,400 receipts in the period April to June 2014. This is 71% lower than the same period a year before in 2013. Waiting times are coming down with around half of appeals being dealt with in 6 months.
