Further pathfinder areas have come on line for the start of Universal Credit. Relatively ‘straight forward’ claims will be taken from clients in Rugby andInverness. A DWPpress release has said that claims are being accepted on line; ‘most people are claiming it on line and the IT is working well...’. Harrogate, Bath and Shotton are due to start in Spring 2014.

The first DWP survey of UC claimants from the Pathfinder areas (opposite) make findings about clients’ attitudes to Universal Credit. 373 claimants were interviewed in the study. 90% made their claims on line. 73% did it at the first attempt. Only 20% understood the taper effect. Note the Pathfinders areas only deal with relatively simple claims. The research lists 26 circumstances where a claim won’t be accepted.
