The government supports those with mortgage housing costs who are on Universal Credit, Income Support, JSA(income based), ESA(income related) or Pension Credit by including an amount in those benefits for mortgage housing costs. A standard reduced rate from July 2015 now applies of 3.12%(was 3.69%) of the outstanding eligible balance per year.

Also set to apply for new claims from 1 /4 /2016, the government has introduced law which means that no costs will be payable until a 39 week waiting period has lapsed(there is a currently a more generous 13 week waiting period). Under Universal Credit the monthly equivalents are 9 assessment period(replacing 3 assessment periods).
