Remember to advise your clients to claim short term benefit advances where appropriate.

The government has said -

'The total volume of Short Term Benefit Advance (STBA) applications received from April 2013 to March 2014 was around 313,000. This figure relates to JSA, ESA, IS and IB applications only. Of these applications, around 90,000 received an immediate payment of benefit. Of the remaining 223,000, around 79,000 were successful in receiving a Short Term Benefit Advance with an average award of approximately £57.00.'

Delays in Benefits- DWP Short term Benefit Advances 

Introduced to replace some crisis loan payments that are not part of Local Welfare Provision and interim payments.  We are concerned that the number of payments seem to be significantly lower than the schemes they have replaced.

 

Conditions-

• The client has an entitlement or is expected to have an entitlement to benefit but there is a delay in payment. 

• Benefit does not include Housing Benefit,  DLA,  PIP,  AA,  Child Benefit,  SSP, SMP.

• Financial need- regulation 7-‘ result in a serious risk of damage to the health or safety of A(client) or any member of their family.‘

• 12 weeks repayment period- this is the maximum recovery period.

• no right of independent appeal-only judicial review.
